Tuesday April 1, 2014 (gathering #13)
Three fools went into the woods and gathered 140 gallons of sap about 6:30pm. The wind was impressive! (It seemed too blustery in the big woods to invite friends over). It was noisy even in the center of the woods. The ants and a few flies are here so the end is surely near. The thought was that leaving an inch of sap in buckets for perhaps 2 days was a bad idea for several reasons. Gerri thought the exercise would be good for them. Bob reminded her half way through the woods how great the exercise was! The last few days workouts have been all about the arms, tonight was all about the legs.
It was likely foolish to gather as we took no syrup off tonight (press time is 1015pm) and there was none off yet. Jack and Chuck were looking kinda droopy. Jack noticed the steam didn't even smell as sweet tonight! Brad brought some more wood into the camp tonight. Bob had a meeting in town. Sue brought Mary & George back for a ride as we are all excited that you can DRIVE back without difficulty today. (It will rain tomorrow!)
Amazingly, there remains a 4 inch deep, narrow snow drift in the field on the north side of the woods. Gerri thought about making a snowman for an "april fools" treat for all of those thinking it is spring, but decided walking 20 extra feet and bending over sounded like too big a sacrifice at that point in the evening. It was really the thought that counted :)
From March 16th of 2003. Eleven years makes a little difference! (Well except Jack, young and vibrant as ever!)
