President's Day

Yet another beautiful day that began with a little fog, about 34 degrees this am and colder than we had thought it would be. We spent most of the day working on other agricultural projects that have been on the back burner. Bob went to check the woods about 3 pm and found little to nothing in terms of sap....so he sent out the group text to call off the troops and took Wally to the house for water. He loaded up the finished syrup in the back and hauled that to the house . Chuck was NOT given the day off and cleaned up the odds and ends of wood around that we have been avoiding using when time and heat were factors. Adam's  Twp Rd 178 taps are still running well (he brought 12 gallons) and Chuck brought 4. They tossed that in the flu pan as they pushed with water behind it.

Bob sent out a text that it is likely over  BUT , IF the weather forecast warrants it, there will be a "scrub buckets with bleach" party on Thursday evening. Gerri recalls attending one of these parties in the remote past on a warm Sunday afternoon with Mark and Susan on the East path. If memory serves her correctly....it wasn't that much fun.

They ended up taking off 3 gallons of darker syrup tonight. Below is a picture of the darker niter in the back. Bob said they could hear the niter breaking off of the pan as they boiled tonight.

This was officially only the 9th day since we started. We are within 469  gallons of sap of the entire season last year. This has been a fast and furious week. Thanks to everybody  who has helped.......many almost daily ....truly appreciate it.....gonna have to get together and argue about something next week for old times sake.

Sunday Feb. 19, 2017

Yet another gorgeous, unfebruary type of day. Temperature rose into the 60's with warm sun and little wind. Crazy warm for this time of year. The temperature dropped to a whopping 41 last night, the trees ran some, not great by any means.

We went to church minus Brad who was charged with setting up a campfire and getting  the wood ready to fire in the camp. Chuck came early to help. The Yantz family came for a visit and walk.

Adam and Katie engaged lola in a game of catch with a large stick and larger mud hole. She had a great time getting attention and filthy dirty. Katie's sister Kelsey took the brunt of that with a muddy leg as a souvenir of her visit. Kelsey took this pic....she looks a little possessed.

To bathe or not to bathe....not a question tonight.

Pretty sure this is the black silt all farmers look for.....hey neighbor...maybe we could grow pumpkins in the tub?????

Chuck, Bob and Brad quit Saturday night with 13 inches in the upper tank. Leaving the sap sit overnight made for a little darker syrup today. Boiling sped along pretty quick so by the time the rest of the troops decided to get moving, the supply was squeaky low. Wally made 3 dumps to keep the evaporator full as we gathered. Chuck put wood in, Bob took wood out. Katie waited patiently for Wally to return.

The stairs hit the ground and the reese hitch came loose, Mr. B watches as Adam and Brad fix that up.

This also necessitated gathering backwards which was a shamefully big deal to some people. Maybe one of our growing edges needs to be flexibility? Trying new things??

We found a whopping 197 gallons in the woods and Chuck brought over 14 gallons from Sandhill Rd and Adam brought 13 gallons. The taps in the parsonage yard ran well. There were a couple of buckets sorted out with mold and a much larger presence of ants today..sadly.

For a first time ever ( in February anyway) we set up a camp outside today with our fire ring and moved the picnic table outside. We cooked hot dogs and enjoyed sitting outdoors. The fire ring works great we came up with some ideas for future campouts. Thanks Fruth family!!

Aunt Dorothy and Karen and Monetta and Susan R. all came for a visit today. Nice day for a walk.

Mr. Birch came to help today and Gary and Becky walked over to say hello. Chuck got a little irritated realizing that everyone was socializing while he was working . Huge surprise, he complained. Bob told him to go to the red union house in the back yard to register any further concerns. Chuck was quiet for awhile.

Sue P. and later Charlie, Julie and Brylee came for a visit. Bob invited Charlie over as he found out he had pork. We all tasted and approved haha. We sat outside and enjoyed smores for the first time this year. Every night in the previous week everyone was too pooped to mess with melting marshmallows...they are tricky little boogers when you are tired.

Lovely day here! Hard to know what to do first today. It was sunny and warm. and breezy for awhile this afternoon but became much more still this pm. the taps ran almost constantly today.

Bob started a fire about 2:30 to burn in the sap leftover from last night. Around 3:15 Gerri and Bob made the first pass through the short path and found 150 gallons of very clear sap. Muff, Katie, Jenny,  Adam, Brad and Karen came to collect as Dale drove.

Our sophisticated system of tracking our daily activity in the woods is actually very helpful.

We had a really nice meal tonight that looked a lot like leftovers from last night.

The syrup ran through the filters rapidly tonight with very little niter today.

Conversation tonight was rather spirited with a lot of friendly fire.

Friday Feb. 17, 2017

Yesterday was also cool and although there was some sap running, there were no workers willing to run. Bob canned off some syrup with a great deal of difficulty but nevertheless accomplished the canning goal and has to return to clean up the mess at some point.

Friday was pretty with high around 60 degrees and just a slight breeze.Brad and Bob gathered the short north and found a little over a 100 gallons to get started. Bob stuck to the plan to start gathering later tonight at 5:30 anticipating more help. Katie, Adam, Gerri, Muff, Gary, Kevin , Jenny , Dale and Karen finished the rounds just in the nick of time..dark again.

The woods is very, very dry compared to most times. Footing is typically a big issue and not so now. The leaves have dried and feel crunchy underfoot.

We always enjoy sharing what we see along the way in terms of wildlife signs, always deer and coon tracks etc. The hallmark this year is woodpecker holes. They are everywhere. We caught sight of one of these birds on sunday while gathering. This cherry is right along the north path. Adam sees a disturbing face in the hole?!

Lots of food tonight....aunt Dorothy made soup, Karen and Adam made rice krispie treats, Muff and Gerri made tacos.... nice to sit down and enjoy eating once before it was too late.

Both Adam and Chuck brought sap from their taps to add to the mix.

Sue came for a visit later in the evening. Brad attended the basketball game and sent scores homebound.

Wednesday Feb.15, 2017

Turned slightly cooler today , mid temperature around 30 degrees with a few snow flurries. Really did not matter as we did not even check buckets for fear of finding sap. Today was deemed a resting day. Bob & Brad both took a nap after school.

The last three days were equivalent to half of last year's entire season. Everybody feeling it.

A few pics from the past few days.

Saturday am cutting an Ash tree on the north path.

 Wonder what lives in here?

HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!

FUN FACT: 428 page views yesterday, assuming aunt dorothy did not look 427 times....that is really great!

Another sunny, pretty day with a little wind. Trees apparently did not mind the breeze as they kept on running today. Brad & Bob again did the short north in the late afternoon to get some sap to get started. Chuck got a good fire started and helped Dale cut up a pile of 2 X 4's from Sandhill Rd.  Muff, Adam, Katie, Gary, Susan B. and later Gerri gathered the rest of the woods beginning  on the north, then east then south paths respectively.

The moss is very, very green for the first few days of sap season.

On the way to the south path, Adam apparently asked Gerri if she thought they should dump the tank. She answered no. After he drove Wally 50 yards past the camp Gerri asked Adam why he didn't dump the tank. Gerri didn't hear what Adam said that time either...just hands thrown up in the air and probably an eye roll....too dark to see that. Everything happens for a reason...guess it was Adam's need to practice backing up Wally that led to this. Woops.

It was nearly dark when we arrived back at the camp ......if only Adam had not wasted all that time backing up....but A LOT better than the marathon the night before.  There were 370 gallons in all tonight, perhaps a little more than expected. The syrup is very light and tastes much better to us than day one.

Susan B. ran to Shiloh today and brought back some carbs. Ted and Nancy were kind enough to  make a subway run....Brad returned from practice in time to enjoy that aspect of the evening. He split some wood to amuse himself. Several of us had a nice visit with Cody on the phone (he called Chuck to see what was going on...figured he would be the most reliable source of info....haha).

Chuck appeared to be in better shape than the rest of the crew tonight with his quick wit. Brad said to be sure to mention in the blog that Chuck is "all cranked up today." Happy to do so as that will give him something to complain about tomorrow. Today's main gripe centered around his assumption that Bob stole some of his buckets!

Very excited to see the neighbors camp all filled up with light and life! Good for you!!! Bob had a fun chat with Jackie and Rick at intervals.

This is the sunset view from the camp on Friday Feb 10th, the night before we tapped trees.

 Brad and Lola's Sunday
evening nap.

Driver Sunday not as cute as Driver Saturday :)

FINALLY found somebody, other than Cody, that thinks I am a good lap dog!

Only light on in the camp for awhile tonight as the pump was on to move the sap up to the upper tank.
The level of light at the end of gathering looking west.
Wally's head lights heading back to the camp (east).

Monday Feb. 13, 2017

A beautiful and sunny day today that was relatively still, (the wind cranked up last evening before we were done). Bob and Brad and Dale started gathering the newly named "short north " to get started. They had 130 gallons and returned to the camp to start a fire. Bob and Dale went onto the south path and Brad left for practice. Chuck reports that when he showed up the camp was raging with fire and nobody was there. He apparently saved the fort. Adam arrived by the middle of the south path, ........Dale voiced that he was never so glad to see Adam as he was tonight. They headed for the north path and Chuck called and said he was out of sap so Dale sped back with Wally . Bob reports that he and Adam quietly held up a couple of trees while waiting for Dale to return. He says they did not even speak. They then sloppily gathered the east path, Bob states that they left quite  a few buckets untouched, anything that seemed "too far to walk to" remained there. This is really 180 degree turn in philosophy from the one who has barked about leaving drops in the woods. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Adam got to use his special forehead "mining" light. Dale now thinks he needs one of those. They returned soaking wet in sweat to the sugarcamp and stripped off wet layers. Since Bob, Brad, Chuck, Adam and Dale were the only participants tonight , this is their story, but nobody really knows
what happened out there.

Apparently they ate Briley's brownies complete with special hearts...thank you!!! and nearly  finished off the bottled water supply. Brad stopped on his way home from practice for hot dogs and lucky charms. Brad says the syrup taken off tonight was "best ever".

You know you are tired when you can sleep with your nose in Bob's smelly boot!!

Plan for tomorrow is take bottle of Aleve to the camp.

SUNDAY

So much for a day of rest. Wow. Wow. Wow.

As a fun aftermath of yesterday, the most FAQ last evening and this am ...."where is the Aleve?" Today's community bonding moment involved recognition that everyone, perhaps except Brad, was feeling the aftermath of Saturday's outing.

Sunday actually started a little on the slow side as we regrouped at the breakfast table. Gerri stayed behind to homestead a bit while everyone else met Muff at the woods and finished cleaning the tanks, evaporator and firing up the generator etc.

Kelsey and Bob checked buckets before breakfast.

Nobody really said much, but it can presumed that getting Wally ready did not go smoothly as this seemed to take a lot of time and Evan and Brad's carharts looked like they rolled in something.

About 1 pm a large contingent of faithfuls (Susan B., Katie, Adam, Nancy, Ted, Kevin, Jenny, Kaleb, Gary, Ben, Dale, Gerri & Brad) made a "quick" trip around a the middle of the woods for 180 or so gallons, just enough to quickly return to the camp so Bob could get started boiling. Buckets looked a little fuller than he expected this am and he was having visions of midnight dance through his head.

Gathering essentially went off without much of a hitch with the exception of having to cut out of the east path as the tank was full. 735 gallons were found with 20 collected off of the original short path we started on (about an hour later) for a total of 755 gallons. This is the 6th largest sap amount (at least in the last 6 years in which we have tracked it daily) to ever be collected. This is the earliest tap date since we have recorded them in 2001.  The next closest, in 2012, we tapped trees on Feb 13 and 14th. Bob says he never recalls ever before, and we have no record of in recent times, getting this much sap within 24 hours of tapping.

Everyone ate, rested and visited  (we laughed that we went through about 60 bottles of water in 2 days haha!!.)

On the downside.....the sap is not terribly sweet. 2% sugar content in the sap yesterday and 1.5%  today. Bob is not crazy about the flavor. The first syrup came off at 4:30 pm this afternoon. Struggled to find a bucket to put it in.

As we have not tapped the soft maples the last couple of years, and tapped some new trees this year, we ran out of buckets. Bob has been to Lima once in the last week on a plastic run and may need to go again as we need more canning & for the newly tapped territory on Twp Rd 178. Adam took some straggler supplies home tonight to see how far he could get. Sandhill Rd is just behind...and they do not care....and they may not try to catch up.

Chuck returned to splitting wood and firing with typical complaints about the lead time of his notification of such activities. Our favorite canine neighbor Bruce Oney came for a visit.....Lola always enjoys this...but has not yet recovered from yesterday. Kevin wasted a couple of minutes of all of our lives explaining a hillbilly plan to fix the roof on the camp (which has now moved closer to the top of the priority list).

Our best specimen yet for a lightening strike.
