Cannot believe it has been a year since the last post. Rather sad.
Cleary our most exciting event in the last year is the addition of a new generation to the farm with the birth of Emma Marie Rine on April 11, 2022!! She made her first visit to the farm for Thanksgiving of 2022. This of course necessitated trips to Kansas in April, July and September !!
Already getting in tractor time during Kansas wheat harvest! Please ignore Grandpa Stroberg's tractor's off red paint!

Proving we know how to dress for winter!
Work continues on the Turner house and barns. The sheep are multiplying like rabbits. The above is the creeper pen.

The crop farm did well with good weather. The blueberry patch is water logged..water laying in the rows between...a problem that we hope to resolve in 2023. The only thing we grew much of in the berry patch last year was tadpoles..numbers in biblical proportions.
The fall was dry and harvest was easy and early...until the last 80 acres that took about 2 weeks with a multitude of breakdowns. Parts, of any kind, still remain hard to get and there was a lot of "waiting". We finished the last field of corn about 11 pm on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
Jack and Marsha visited over the Thanksgiving holiday for the first time in several years. Bob, Jack, Cody, Brad and Emma pause work for a picture.
The Christmas holidays of 2022 were perhaps the quietest ever!! Gerri attempted to do 58 hours of continuing education in December...... a feat never to be repeated again. The worst storm of the winter thus far lasted only a little over 24 hours, but blew in untimely on Dec 23rd. Blizzard like conditions with only 4 or 5 inches of snow and very cold wind chills to 20 degrees below zero ushered in christmas weekend. The wind caused poor visibility and stopped traffic for the better part of the 23rd and 24th. Our family togetherness project for Christmas weekend was all testing positive for covid. Thankfully nobody very ill...just slept and slept and slept. Bob made eggs for christmas lunch! We are thankful to the Hoover family who fed us that weekend with soup and chicken pot pie and more!!
The week following the guys worked on running electric and water to the barn on County Rd. 21 with a new trencher. Good to work outdoors for a bit!! The electric and water has been appreciated with 45 new lambs!! (may be off 1 or 2, literally have lost count)
One of the warmest Jan and Feb that we can recall! It is dry in the woods as well. Very few mud puddles. Wind has perhaps been the weather event so far this winter but surprisingly few trees blocking paths.
Bob has spent a good deal of the year thus far in Florida with his folks. Jack and Marsha have not had a smashing holiday season either...both had covid, both have new fractures, Marsha a new knee and they are in the process of trying to move down the street to a larger home. Bob has admitted that he has enjoyed their company and the seafood and sunshine this winter. Muff, Gary, Michelle, Gerri, Cody, Amy and Emma all made brief visits as well.
Building new steps for grandpa at the new house!
The first work afternoon in the woods happened unplanned on Saturday Feb 11th when Justin arrived mid morning and said "lets go!". He helped Bob and Brad to sharpen chain saw chains and make a few paths. Gerri backpacked some lunch to the woods and was thrilled to see 3 Walle loads of nice looking wood chips!!
Always interesting to see what has happened in the woods over the winter. Appears this is a squirrel pantry
On a sad note , Lola , our yellow lab passed away shortly after the camp season last year. Bob's valentine's day present this year was Blue, Blue Pickle is his full name. (short for Pickleseimer...as he hails from KY!! Wilson family humor) He came from the homestead of Chris and Cori from Kentucky, about one hour south of Lexington. He was dropped off there and they loved him back to life over 5 months. He is gentle and kind. Runs like Jack-Jack in the movie The Incredibles though. All you see is a streak. Herding in that streak is going to be a challenge. He has made several trips to the woods and to his credit has stayed with us thus far.
Valentine's Day Brad and Bob cut some wood and put it in totes. Adam will be glad to see that we have 8 carts ready to go! Wednesday Feb 15th was so warm Bob took the opportunity to use the power washer to clean the holding tanks in the sap building. He also used the warm water to help clean up the evaporator. The best news of Thursday is that the water he left in it on Wednesday was still there meaning we have no huge leaks!! YEA! A new evaporator is on the list, just not all that high on the list yet ! The pennies welded in a couple of years ago remain intact!!
Not clean but cleaner....
We are the last to tap in the neighborhood...again. To some degree we are not ready...but Bob is holding out for colder weather which has arrived today. Tomorrow sounds like a perfectly miserable weather day so should be a good day to tap!!
